Traditional Sugar Cookies

3/4 cup shortening (part butter)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
2 and 1/2 cups flour

Mix thoroughly shortening, sugars, eggs and flavoring. Blend in flour, baking powder and salt. Cover. Chill at least 1 hour. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Roll dough 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured cloth covered board. Place on ungreased cooking sheet. Bake 6 to 8 minutes unitl lightly brown.

Butter Icing

9 tbsp butter
3 tsp vanilla
6 tbsp boiling water
3 pinches of salt
4 and 1/2 cups siften powdered sugar

Cream butter, add boiling water, vanilla and salt. Slowly add sifted powdered sugar, stirring constantly until creamy mixture is formed.
