LEGO Dimensions starts in an unusual way. You start off with a cutscene where you learn about the characters and their abilities. Then the game says hey, wait… Put down your controller and build a pretty awesome portal. That is a cool new interactive experience.
The portal took me about an hour to build. After it was all said and done, the portal looked pretty darn sweet. It is not required to build the portal to play the game if you don’t want to, but I think it adds to the game tremendously.
Learning the characters was pretty self explanatory and simple. Learning how the portal worked was a bit of a different story. You do not just set the character down and play the game. Some parts of the game you have to physically move the LEGO figures around on different sides of the portal. It took a little bit of getting used to, but in the long run it was not that confusing and really added to the game play.
Mixing Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle together to make a team was an entertaining way of doing things. Being able to play different characters with different abilities, while walking down the Yellow Brick Road blended very well together. Batman’s reaction to the Wizard of Oz’s Scarecrow was priceless. The boss fight with the Wicked Witch of the West had me multitasking, one minute I was moving LEGO figures around on the portal and the next I was fighting her evil minions.
Interacting with Twitch viewers was a new experience for me. I found myself pausing the game just to answer questions about gameplay.
After playing for two hours. I can already tell that I am addicted. Well, LEGOs are addicting as it is, but being able to physically build something and then playing it in a video game is pretty sweet. Defiantly worth it!
