Game Controllers for your iPhone 5

Jaci here again, thought I would give this new software a shot. As you may know I am a gamer girl with a passion for new technology. You may know me as herron giggles on Xbox Live and PSN. Let’s get started.

I’ve recently obtained the Logitech Powershell Game Controller + Battery and the MOGA Ace Power Game Controller. What a mouth-full of a name these two devices have. They’re game controllers for the 5th generation iPod and iPhone 5, 5s, and 5c. I will be trying these sleek new controllers out using my iPhone 5c.

Logitech Powershell Game Controller + Battery

The Logitech Powershell Controller was the first one that I tried out. The box itself looked really neat. The front of the package opens up like a book, on the inside of the flap is the Logitech Logo. To the right of the logo, the Powershell controller sits perfectly displayed. The Logitech uses a Micro-USB charging cable to charge the controller, which is included along with a headphone extender, and iPod touch adapter.

After charging the Logitech, I slipped in the phone to give it a shot. The phone fit very snug in the game controller. On the left hand side there is a power switch. When you flip the switch, turn over the game controller and you will see the Logitech Logo glow a neon blue. I really liked the fact that there is an indication of when the game controller is turned on. If your phone is in the Logitech and you flip the switch, the Logitech charges your phone. There is no battery life indication on the device to tell you how much of a charge your controller has.

The Logitech has the standard X,Y,B, and A buttons along with a pause button, which allows you to conveniently pause the game. It also has left and right bumper buttons. The Logitech incorporates a D-pad to use for movement. The Logitech has a very comfortable feeling in your hands.

MOGA Ace Power Game Controller

The MOGA Ace Power Game Controller came in an ordinary orange colored box with a sleeve cover. Nothing too special about the design of this package. The MOGA uses a Micro-USB charging cable to charge the controller. The MOGA also includes the iPod touch and iPhone 5 adapters which makes the device your using fit perfectly.

I had the hardest time getting my phone into the MOGA, it just didn’t fit right. Come to find out the MOGA shipped with the iPhone 5 and 5s adapters already in place. After removing them the phone fit very well. The MOGA expands to fit your device in the game controller. Once you have your device in the game controller flip over the MOGA and there is a lock and a release switch which stops it from moving while you are playing. When you are finished simply release the lock, remove your device, and collapse the MOGA, which can now fit right into your pocket.

On the left hand side of the MOGA there is a power button that is completely useless. All it does is lock your iPhone. There is no way to power the MOGA on and off that I have found. There is a MOGA boost switch on the bottom right of this controller. Flip it to the right and the game controller will charge your phone, however it will stop charging your phone when the controller’s battery life drops down to 25%. In the upper right of the controller is a battery life indicator. This might be a really neat feature to have.

The MOGA Ace Power Game Controller has the standard X,Y,B, and A buttons along with a pause button to pause the game if you have to. It also has left and right bumper and trigger buttons. The MOGA sports not just a D-pad, but it also has dual analog sticks. The MOGA is made more complex, therefore it is not as comfortable in your hands.

Gameplay

Mini Gore 2 was the first app that I tried with the Logitech. The D-pad on the game controller seems a little difficult to use. It is not as sensitive as it should be, which makes it hard to move around when you’re trying to slaughter zombies. I enjoyed everything else about the Logitech. It has a very comfortable feeling in my hands, which created a great gaming experience.

I also played Mini Gore 2 using the MOGA game controller. The dual analog sticks makes it easy to navigate as I kill waves of zombies. The MOGA doesn’t have the comfortable feeling like the Logitech does, but it still makes gameplay very enjoyable.

Ice Rage was the second app choice that I decided to try. It was a little difficult to move around the hockey rink with the D-pad on the Logitech. Using the D-pad to move around started to hurt my thumb. Everything else worked just fine.

Ice Rage on the MOGA was fun. The dual analog sticks makes it really easy to skate around the rink. This game controller worked extremely  well with Ice Rage. I forgot how much fun this little app was. Being able to use the game controllers makes it much more enjoyable than using the iPhone itself. I completely forgot that you can play the Mini Gore zombie character in Ice Rage which made it even more cool.

Dead Trigger was my next choice. I was pretty excited to play this game using these controllers. I can’t really give the controllers a review with the first Dead Trigger considering all you can do is move. With both the Logitech and the MOGA all you can do is move. I was really bummed out when i came across this. The other buttons are useless. In order to play the game You have to use the right side of your phone screen to shoot and reload. When using the Logitech you need to use the right side of the phone screen to look from left to right. I was pretty annoyed when i came across this.

Moving on to Dead Trigger 2. Using the Logitech I had the same issue as I did with the first one. You can only move back and forth. There is no way to look left or right so you need to use the right side of the phone screen. In Dead Trigger 2 you can switch weapons using the “Y” button, but that is it. The game auto shoots for you which is really annoying, because it make the game that much easier.

On the other hand I am very impressed with the MOGA. All the controls work, which translates to Dead Trigger 2 very nicely. LT to aim, X to reload, Y to switch weapons, and of course the dual analog sticks work very well for movement. The game still auto shoots itself, but Dead Trigger 2 works very well with the MOGA. The sensitivity looking side to side is very touchy but that can be changed in the setting option of the game.

Over the next couple of months I will post more game reviews with these game controllers, as I have time to play with them. Some of the games that i will be testing out might be Asphalt 8, Asterix: MegaSlap, Bastion, Grand Theft Auto: San Andres, and many more. After I have more time with these devices, I will give you my opinion on battery life and durability.

Conclusion

Both of these game controllers are pretty neat. They have their pros and cons. Each controller create a solid gaming experience. If you like gaming to be simple, go for the Logitech. If you’re more of a complex gamer, the MOGA would be the choice for you.
